Appalachian Restoration Through Reforestation with Dr. Patrick Angel

Oakbrook’s Stewards of Creation hosted a presentation by Patrick Angel, Ph.D., science and core team member of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI). He talks about the impact of mountain top removal and how ARRI is working to reclaim coal mined lands.

Dr. Angel is a forester and soil scientist from Kentucky who works for the Dept. of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation. His roots stem from Appalachia, he has reached across all sides of the coal mining issue, and knows the science of how to grow trees in these depleted soils.

Each Spring ARRI offers numerous opportunities for tree planting in Appalachia. Oakbrook Stewards of Creation has had the privilege of working under ARRI to plant thousands of trees in West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
